The Padres, as a franchise, changed when signed in 2019.

In six seasons with San Diego, Machado has twice finished in the top five in National League MVP Award voting, he's twice brought the Padres to the postseason (with a third trip in reach) and now, he's the franchise home run king, having broken Nate Colbert's longstanding record on Tuesday night in Seattle.

Machado has more than delivered for San Diego on the field. Just as notably, he's delivered for the city off the field as well. Machado's franchise home run record is only one of two notable achievements for the superstar third baseman this week.

On Monday, Machado was named the team's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award -- the most prestigious individual honor a Major Leaguer can receive. The Clemente Award recognizes a player who best represents baseball through character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

"It’s an honor, honestly," Machado said. "Even just to be mentioned in the same category as him, it’s a blessing, it’s truly an honor. Hopefully, we continue to grow and help this game grow like how he wanted it to."

Each MLB club nominates one player for the league-wide award. (The Padres, as it would happen, have two, with right-hander Jason Adam -- a Trade Deadline acquisition -- named the Rays' nominee.)

Machado, for all of his obvious on-field successes, has made off-field contributions a priority, too. He and his family now spend the offseason in San Diego.

This past offseason was a particularly poignant one for Machado, following the passing of Peter Seidler, the Padres' beloved owner. Seidler was renowned for his work in the community and Machado has since been involved with the newly created Peter Seidler Legacy projects, which address a cause Seidler was passionate about -- ending homelessness in the region.

In addition to Seidler Legacy Projects, Machado's work in the community runs deep:

• Along with the San Diego Rescue Mission, he teamed up to form the "Be A Pro And Always Go" program, which addresses low attendance rates in underserved communities. (That's a fitting cause for Machado, who seemingly never misses time on the field.)

• Machado continues his involvement with "Manny's Hot Corner," which provides opportunities for kids in underserved communities -- including occasional trips to Petco Park.

• Machado recently launched his own foundation -- Team Machado: The Sky's the Limit. It supports underserved youth in San Diego, Miami and the Dominican Republic. On that front, Machado has helped to provide school supplies for foster children.

• Machado remains involved in several Padres endeavors. He was a part of a holiday bike giveaway during a surprise visit to a nearby elementary school. Machado also helped host local youth clinics during the team's international series in Seoul and Mexico City.

So while Machado was celebrated on Tuesday, manager Mike Shildt made sure to laud him for Monday’s news as well.

"Congratulations to Manny on a couple of fronts," Shildt said. "Not only the franchise record for home runs, which we celebrated in the clubhouse -- and rightfully so, what an accomplishment for a great player.

“But also off the field, it’s a really nice day for Manny as well, being the rightful Roberto Clemente nominee for our club. I get the privilege of watching him behind the scenes and how good he is, especially with kids. He just does a lot of things for our community. Well deserved. I hope he wins the whole thing."
