Manny nearly homers, picks up 1st hit with SD

Third baseman yet to have a ball hit to him on defense

March 4th, 2019

PEORIA, Ariz. -- looks like Manny Machado at the plate this spring. He’s still hitting the ball with authority to all fields. He’s just doing it in a brand new setting.

The Padres’ prized free-agent signing checked two more boxes on Monday afternoon, recording his first Cactus League hit and his first run in an 8-0 victory over Cleveland.

Machado, who walked and popped out in his debut on Saturday, came a few feet from his first spring homer in the first inning when he sent a Shane Bieber offering to the right-field warning track. Tyler Naquin tracked it down in front of the wall.

Three innings later, Machado found some space in the outfield. He led off with a laser into the right-center-field gap for a double, and he scored three batters later on 's double.

"He looked very good in the box today, especially those first two at-bats," said Padres manager Andy Green. "He hit that ball really well to right field. On a typical day, I think, that flies out of this park. The second one, that was struck really well, too. Felt great about him today."

In his final at-bat, Machado popped to center, ending the fifth. He's now 1-for-4 with a walk in his two Cactus League contests for San Diego. Machado batted third on Monday after hitting second on Saturday. Before the game, Green was asked if he has an early preference on a lineup spot for his 300-million-dollar man.

“Well, we definitely like him getting to the plate a lot,” Green said, and he left it at that.

Of course, Machado’s bat represents only half of his game. The two-time Gold Glove Award winner is still awaiting his first chance defensively this spring.

In his two games, Padres opponents have yet to hit a ball in his direction. Sure enough, half an inning after Machado was removed on Monday, Hanley Ramirez smashed a one-hopper to third baseman , who started an around-the-horn double play.

Covering the bases

First: Left-hander , perhaps the favorite in a wide-open race for Opening Day starter, worked three scoreless frames with little resistance on Monday. Facing a Cleveland lineup with a handful of big leaguers, Lucchesi allowed just one baserunner (a second-inning ground-ball single from Greg Allen), and he struck out three.

Second: Perhaps nothing impressed the Padres’ brass more about last season than his refined two-strike approach. It was on display Monday, as the righty slugger doubled twice in three at-bats. In the first, Reyes found himself in an 0-2 hole against Bieber. He shortened his swing and smashed a liner into the left-center-field gap. Reyes, who is part of a tight race for outfield spots, tacked on another double in the sixth.

Third: Shortstop Javier Guerra hit a bases-clearing double as the Padres broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Early last month, Guerra earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Caribbean Series in his native Panama, but he’d been hitless in his first eight at-bats this spring.

Home: The Padres' season-opening March 28 tilt against the Giants is sold out, the club announced Monday, marking the 16th straight season in which San Diego has sold out its Opening Day.

Up next

The Padres will split their squad Tuesday for the first time this spring. They face the Mariners in Peoria and the White Sox in Glendale. Both games are slated to begin shortly after noon PT. Lefty Logan Allen will face the White Sox, and righty will take the hill opposite Seattle. Both prospects have an outside shot at a place in a wide-open rotation.
