X-rays clear for Machado after HBP to hand
SAN DIEGO -- Brad Keller’s wildness helped lift the Padres’ offense out of the doldrums Monday night. But it also knocked Manny Machado out of the game.
Machado exited the Padres’ 4-0 victory over the Royals during the fourth inning at Petco Park after Keller plunked him on the left hand with an 81 mph slider with the bases loaded two innings earlier.
Machado, who collected an RBI on the second-inning hit-by-pitch, was examined on the field by the training staff but stayed in to run the bases. He played two more innings at third base before Rougned Odor pinch-hit for him in the fourth.
X-rays were negative, Padres manager Bob Melvin said after the game. Machado will be evaluated again on Tuesday.
“It hit him on the top of the hand; might have gotten a nerve in there or something,” Melvin said. “For him to come out of the game, he can’t feel too terribly good. He’s got quite the pain tolerance.”
Machado, 30, has not been on the injured list since 2014, when he was with the Orioles. He remained on the active roster last year despite missing nine games with a severe left ankle sprain.
Keller walked eight batters and had two wild pitches over 3 2/3 innings. He threw only 39 strikes in 94 pitches. The errant pitch that struck Machado gave the Padres a 3-0 lead, more runs than they scored in any game against the Dodgers over the weekend.
