MadBum's monster week nets top NL honor

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner has been named the National League Player of the Week after leading the Majors in strikeouts and innings pitched last week.

Bumgarner went a perfect 2-0, earning his eighth and ninth career complete games in two starts. He struck out 26 in 18 innings, allowing one earned run combined. Bumgarner also walked just one, while scattering eight hits and holding opposing hitters to a .133 average.

"Well earned," manager Bruce Bochy said before Monday's series opener against the Cardinals. "Look what he did; he had two complete games, two beauties. Then you add what he did with the bat. I don't know if somebody is even close to him to be honest."

On Tuesday, Bumgarner struck out 12 Astros hitters and allowed one run on five hits in a 3-1 victory. He became the third Giants pitcher in the San Francisco era to strike out seven consecutive batters in an outing.

The left-hander capped his week with a shutout of the Nationals on Sunday, tying a career high with 14 strikeouts (also June 23 against the Padres). Bumgarner also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs coming on a fifth-inning double and a seventh-inning solo homer.

It was Bumgarner's fourth homer of the year, which leads all Major League pitchers. He also leads all MLB pitchers with seven RBIs.

Bumgarner is tied for the Major League lead in wins (14). It is his first career NL Player of the Week Award.
