NEW YORK -- D-backs right-hander Luke Weaver, who hasn’t pitched since May because of a forearm strain, will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday at the team’s Spring Training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Depending how he feels after that session, the next step for Weaver could be a sim game or he gets out to a Minor League affiliate and throw in a postseason game. Manager Torey Lovullo hopes to see Weaver on a Major League mound before the season ends.

Weaver last pitched on May 26 in San Francisco. In 11 Major League games this season, Weaver is 4-3 with a 3.03 ERA.

“I'm going to remain as optimistic as possible,” Lovullo said. “I’ve seen him throw the ball a couple of times. It was coming out [of his hands] very well. Tomorrow’s bullpen will tell us a lot. I feel there is time for us [to have Weaver on a Major League mound]. He has to check his boxes to make sure that he feels good and it looks right to the medical team before we put him in there. But I think there is a strong chance we see him before the year is over.”

Worth noting

• Left-hander Robbie Ray threw a normal bullpen session on Monday and is expected to make his next start against the Mets on Wednesday. Last Friday, Ray left the game against the Reds after 4 1/3 innings after dealing with blister problems.

• Right-hander Taijuan Walker, who hasn’t played since early 2018 because of Tommy John surgery, played catch at Citi Field without any problems on Monday. Walker is expected to have a bullpen session on Tuesday, but Lovullo is not sure if he will be on a Major League mound this season.
