Voit, Naquin slug way to Players of the Week
Yankees first baseman Luke Voit and Reds outfielder Tyler Naquin have been named the Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet.
Voit earned the American League Player of the Week Award for the third time in his career after hitting .476 (10-for-21) with two homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a 1.427 OPS in six games. The Yankees won all six, extending their winning streak to nine games.
It looked as though Voit might lose playing time when the Yankees acquired Anthony Rizzo at the Trade Deadline, but the first baseman is making it impossible for New York to sit him. Voit, last year’s MLB home run champion, has hit .320 with four homers, 17 RBIs and a .990 OPS in 13 games since returning from the injured list on Aug. 8.
As for Naquin, this is the first time he’s earned the Player of the Week Award in his career. The Cincinnati outfielder produced a .500 average (13-for-26), four homers, a triple, three doubles and a 1.706 OPS in seven games last week to win NL honors.
Non-tendered by Cleveland in the offseason, the 30-year-old has been a great find for the Reds, posting a .268/.333/.482 slash line with a career-high 18 homers and 66 RBIs in 405 plate appearances this season.
