Urias back in action after resting hamstrings

March 11th, 2019

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- returned to game action on Sunday, as he started at shortstop in the Padres’ 11-6 win over the Royals at Surprise Stadium, his first Cactus League contest in 10 days.

On Tuesday, Urias was a late scratch due to what the Padres called “general fatigue” in both hamstrings. It was ruled a precautionary move, and San Diego’s No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, took some time off.

On Sunday, Urias went 0-for-3. He played four innings at shortstop, which Padres bench coach Rod Barajas said was the plan going into the game. Afterward, Barajas confirmed everything went well for Urias.

“He looked great, making some plays he had to range a little bit,” said Barajas, acting as manager with Andy Green away from the team to tend to a family matter. “At-bat-wise, he hit the ball hard a few times. We’re happy with how he came out of today’s game.”

Urias has had past hamstring issues, including last year, when he missed the final three weeks of the season with a left hamstring injury. The Padres likely wanted to proceed with caution so Urias will be ready for Opening Day, when he could be starting at shortstop.

If needed, Urias could rest Monday, a scheduled off-day for the Padres.

Tatis back in camp

, the Padres’ No. 1 prospect and baseball's No. 2 overall prospect, was back in camp on Sunday after having his wisdom teeth removed on Friday. Barajas said Tatis only had “very minimal swelling,” and the shortstop worked out at Peoria Sports Complex.

Tatis will be off Monday, then could return to game action Tuesday, when the Padres play split-squad matchups against the Reds and A’s.

“He’s feeling better,” Barajas said. “I’m sure he’s itching to get back on the field.”

Warren set for Friars debut

will make his Padres debut on Tuesday, when he’s scheduled to pitch in split-squad action against the A’s at the Peoria Sports Complex. The right-hander signed a one-year deal with San Diego on March 1.

Warren went 3-2 with a 3.14 ERA and 52 strikeouts over 47 appearances with the Yankees and Mariners last year. He owns a 3.42 career ERA over seven big league seasons.

Game notes

• Second baseman went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs -- a solo home run in the fifth, followed by a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the sixth that was aided by Royals center fielder Billy Hamilton losing the high fly ball in the sun. Pirela has three home runs this spring.

• Right-hander had his best outing so far this spring, tossing three scoreless innings of relief with three hits allowed, no walks and one strikeout.

, serving as designated hitter, went 2-for-2 with a grand slam, his fourth homer of the spring, and five RBIs.

• After coming off the bench on Saturday, Ty France started at first base, marking his first start since he came out of Friday’s game after getting hit in the head by a pitch. France was hit by a pitch again in the third inning, but he was fine and remained in the game.
