When you can't make it to the beach, why not just bring the beach to the ballpark?

All D-backs outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was missing was a little plastic pail and shovel when he decided to start building a sandcastle outside the top step of the visitors' dugout at American Family Field on Monday night. But he was nothing if not innovative, using a few water cups to fill up with dirt so he could craft his creation.

Gurriel was passing the time during a 9-1 blowout win for the D-backs, who can afford to have a little fun as one of baseball's best stories with a surprising 3.5-game lead in the NL West. And fun was had by the intently focused Gurriel, even if architecture might not be his second act after baseball.

The finished product appeared to be a four-turret structure surrounded by a moat dotted with sunflower seeds.

The D-backs booth had some fun watching Gurriel at work:

"There doesn't seem to be a grand design plan here."

"It's a real-life version of SimCity!"

Maybe if Gurriel had more time, he might have gone for a second story, or even connected his turrets. Here's hoping it doesn't rain in Milwaukee, or the grounds crew doesn't wash it away -- because if his structure is still standing tomorrow, perhaps the outfielder-turned-engineer can get right back to work.
