A special roll call on a special day.

As Jordan Montgomery prepared to throw the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, the crowd’s Bleacher Creatures began their typical ritual of clapping and chanting the names of the Yankees' fielders. On MLB’s inaugural Lou Gehrig Day, that chant included the name of a certain first baseman who will always hold a special place in the hearts of Yanks fans.

“LOU GEH-RIG! LOU GEH-RIG!”

Gehrig spent his entire 17-year career with the Yankees, winning a pair of Most Valuable Player Awards and six World Series titles. The Hall of Famer passed away from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known colloquially as Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 1941, but it’s clear his memory lives on in The Bronx.
