OAKLAND -- The strategy was hardly successful Saturday, yet the A's will try it again, with plans in place to use an "opener" for Tuesday's matchup with the Yankees.
For the second time in four days, reliever Liam Hendriks will start at the Coliseum. Righty Frankie Montas, who will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville ahead of the game, is expected to be involved, according to A's manager Bob Melvin.
Montas likely won't be the only pitcher promoted, with Nashville's season concluding Monday, and the A's could have more than 15 at their disposal out of the bullpen.
Hendriks faced eight batters in opposition of Seattle on Saturday and was on the hook for two runs after allowing two hits and a walk on 30 pitches. The A's proceeded to use eight more pitchers, tying an Oakland record with nine pitchers in as many innings in an 8-7 loss.
A's deal for another pitcher
The A's reacquired right-hander Aaron Brooks on Monday, sending cash to the Brewers to complete the deal for additional pitching depth.
Lefty Danny Coulombe was designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster for Brooks, who originally came to the A's with Sean Manaea in the 2015 Benjamin Zobrist deal.
He has since latched on with the Cubs and Brewers, spending this season with Triple-A Colorado Springs and compiling a 9-4 record and a 3.35 ERA in 26 games, including 15 starts. Brooks was 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA in four August starts. He was designated for assignment Saturday.
"If you look at least up until today, we had a lot of arms, we didn't have a lot of length in the arms, so [he's] another guy that had a really good Triple-A season," Melvin said. "We've had some history with him here before, too. Just adds to the mix."
Brooks' last Major League appearance came with the A's in 2015; he posted a 6.71 ERA in 11 games, nine of them starts.
