Leury (thumb) to miss rest of regular season
CHICAGO -- Leury García severed a ligament in his left thumb diving into first base for an infield hit on Monday in Detroit and will need surgery to correct the issue, per manager Rick Renteria.
The veteran utility player was moved to the 45-day injured list prior to Saturday’s doubleheader with the Cardinals at Guaranteed Rate Field; infielder Cheslor Cuthbert's contract was purchased from the organization’s alternate training facility.
Losing García is a tough break for the White Sox, as he has played every position but catcher.
“I guess we're going to have to figure it out,” said Renteria of covering for García’s extended absence. “We're going to have [Danny Mendick], who can go into multiple positions. He's continuing to work in the outfield.
“[Ryan] Goins is here right now, he can work at multiple positions. We still have [Adam] Engel rotating through the outfield. We'll have to manage the situation. It's a big loss for us, because he was so flexible and capable of doing so much. But it's just one of those things we're going to have to deal with and continue to move forward.”
The switch-hitting García is batting .271 with three home runs and eight RBIs over 16 games this season. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 11 but is not expected back until October at the earliest.
Right-handed reliever Ian Hamilton has also been placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Aug. 12) with a sore right shoulder. Left-hander Bernardo Flores was recalled from Schaumburg to serve as the 29th man for Saturday’s doubleheader.
Flores, who has a 3.18 ERA in 82 Minor League games with the White Sox including 79 starts, was selected in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Third to first
• Saturday’s doubleheader marks the start of 15 straight games played in Chicago by the White Sox. That run includes three games next weekend at Wrigley Field, from Aug. 21-23.
• Tim Anderson’s six career leadoff home runs, including the one he hit on Wednesday in Detroit, rank fifth in franchise history. He trails Ray Durham (20), Adam Eaton and Tim Raines (nine each), and Alejandro De Aza (eight).
• Reynaldo López threw a two-inning side session at Schaumburg on Friday, continuing to work through the soreness in his right shoulder.
“It's like anything,” said Renteria on a potential López return. “We're waiting for everything to continue to move forward positively.”
He said it
“You have a bunch of guys over there, they're professionals. I'm sure with the pedigree of guys they have over there, they are going to go out there and grind. They're going to do everything they can. I can't speak for them, but when you're on the outside looking at their club, I'm sure they're going to try to do the best they can under the circumstances.” -- Renteria, on facing a Cardinals squad playing its first games of August
