Lerner family no longer pursuing sale of Nationals at this time

February 19th, 2024

WEST PALM BEACH -- The Lerner family has been talking about selling the Nationals since as far back as 2022. On Monday, however, managing principal owner Mark Lerner told the Washington Post that his family will continue to run the team for the foreseeable future.

“No. We have determined, our family has determined, that we are not going to sell the team,” Lerner told the newspaper.

Through a team spokesman, Lerner declined to speak to a collection of media at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches on Monday, but the spokesman did confirm his quotes in the Post's article.

The Nationals have been owned by the Lerners since 2006, when the family purchased it from Major League Baseball for $450 million. The franchise had moved from Montreal, where it was known as the Expos, to Washington D.C. following the 2004 season.

Since the Lerners bought the team, the Nationals have made five postseason appearances, winning four National League East titles and a World Series championship in 2019. Lerner is expecting to win more championships in the future.

“Nothing has really changed,” Lerner told the Post. “We’ve just decided that it’s not the time or the place for it. We’re very happy owning the team and bringing us back a ring one day.”
