Lewis undergoes surgery on right meniscus
CLEVELAND -- Kyle Lewis underwent surgery to repair his torn right meniscus on Wednesday in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Jerry Dipoto confirmed on Friday ahead of Seattle’s three-game series opener against Cleveland.
Seattle’s general manager said in a text message that it was “a successful procedure,” and that Lewis will remain in L.A. for seven to 10 days, at which point the club will provide further updates.
That followed up what manager Scott Servais told Mariners radio broadcaster Rick Rizzs ahead of Seattle’s 7-0 loss on Friday. Servais called Lewis’ surgery a “minor” procedure to “clean up a meniscus issue.”
“He’s going to stay [in L.A.] for a few days. He’ll start his rehab out there before he transitions back to Seattle and we get him up and going,” Servais said. “But all positive, all thumbs up there. Again, no timetable when Kyle is going to be ready and ready to go back on the field, but he's happy with where it's at, knowing that he has some clarity. Now, he just needs to rehab.”
Servais said earlier this week that he was optimistic that Lewis would play again this season. Lewis had been seeking a second opinion after undergoing an MRI by the team that revealed the tear on June 1, when he was placed on the 10-day IL.
He has a history of injuries with that knee, as recently as Spring Training, when he suffered a deep bone bruise that forced him to miss the first 17 games of the regular season. He also tore his ACL in 2016, shortly after he was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft.
The reigning American League Rookie of the Year suffered the injury just as he began to heat up at the plate. Lewis hit .273/.368/.394 over 28 games in May for a 123 wRC+ (league average is 100).
