ARLINGTON -- Orioles starter Kyle Bradish departed Monday night’s 2-0 series-opening win over the Rangers at Globe Life Field in the second inning after taking a 104 mph liner to his right foot. The ball, which came off the bat of Jonah Heim, knocked Bradish to the ground and ricocheted to first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who fielded the ball and stepped on first to make the out.

The O’s announced Bradish has a right foot contusion. Preliminary X-rays were negative for a fracture, but he is scheduled to undergo further evaluation and testing.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde and head athletic trainer Brian Ebel came out to tend to Bradish, who walked off the field without assistance and through the third-base dugout down into the tunnel. The right-hander threw one pitch from the mound to see how he felt, then exited.

Bradish’s first outing of the season had gotten off to a strong start. He retired Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe in order in the first inning on 11 pitches (nine strikes), striking out both Semien and Lowe swinging. Texas had runners on first and second with one out at the time of Heim’s at-bat.

The Orioles sent left-hander Danny Coulombe to the mound in relief, and the left-hander struck out Brad Miller to escape the jam.

Baltimore’s bullpen was already a bit taxed heading into the series, as its first three starters of the year (Kyle Gibson, Dean Kremer and Cole Irvin) combined to pitch only 12 innings during the opening set in Boston. The club would have benefited from a long start by Bradish to take some pressure off its ‘pen.

Instead, the Orioles sent right-hander Tyler Wells (Tuesday night's scheduled starter) to the mound in relief in the fourth, and he went on to throw five hitless innings. They had the flexibility to do that because Gibson could pitch Tuesday on regular rest after a Friday off-day followed his Opening Day start last Thursday.

The O's may need to call up relief reinforcements in the near future, though. Long reliever Austin Voth (who last pitched one inning on Saturday) could be a current roster option to start in the short term.

It is unclear how serious Bradish’s injury may be, but right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (Baltimore’s No. 2 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 7 overall prospect) could be first in line if the Orioles have to fill that rotation spot for an extended period of time.
