Rangers option Bird; lefty Martin called up
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers optioned left-handed reliever Kyle Bird to Triple-A Nashville and called up left-hander Brett Martin on Friday before opening a three-game series with the Astros.
Martin, who has yet to make his Major League debut, has made six appearances for Nashville and allowed one run in eight innings. He has given up seven hits and three walks while striking out 10.
Martin also impressed the Rangers in big league camp this spring. He appeared in seven Cactus League games and did not allow an earned run (four unearned allowed) over nine innings. He allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out 11.
Bird, acquired from the Rays as part of the three-team Jurickson Profar trade last offseason, made the Rangers' roster on Opening Day and made five appearances in his first stint in the Major Leagues. Over 5 1/3 innings, he allowed four runs on four hits and seven walks while striking out three.
Bird did earn his first Major League save by recording the final two outs in a 5-2 win over the D-backs on April 10.
