Wong's creative defense earns Play of the Week
The Cardinals' Kolten Wong is the latest recipient of the Play of the Week presented by W.B. Mason for his dazzling double play in Sunday's series finale against the Angels in St. Louis, MLB announced Monday.
Wong earned his status in the blink of an eye in the third inning. He got creative on a sharp grounder hit to second base by Kole Calhoun, hauling it in and deflecting it with his glove to shortstop Paul DeJong, all in one motion, to start a double play.
Wong's impressive redirection brought the Busch Stadium crowd to their feet, with cheers erupting before DeJong even threw to first to complete the play and Cardinals play-by-play man Dan McLaughlin enthusiastically labeling it "some Curly Neal, Harlem Globetrotter stuff out there behind the second-base bag."
Wong is the first Cardinals player to win Play of the Week, an award that's new for the 2019 campaign.
