PHOENIX -- D-backs outfielder Ketel Marte is getting closer to returning to the active roster, but there are still a few hurdles he needs to clear before that happens.

Marte, who has been on the injured list since April 8 with a strained right hamstring, took fly balls and regular batting practice prior to Tuesday's game against the Marlins and he also ran from home to first, first to third and home to third.

"He looks fantastic," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "We’ve got to gauge how protective he is, where he’s feeling discomfort and get that information from him and start to drum up what the next set of plans will be. The two things I saw him do today, he was very impressive, strong and comfortable. It’s always encouraging when you get a chance to see one of your athletes healing and showing the improvements that he’s showing."

One thing that Marte has yet to do is stop and start quickly, something he is expected to start shortly.

"We still have some steps that we need to take care of and that’s going to take a little bit of time," Lovullo said. "He’s trending towards a healthy recovery, we’re in that final furlong to where we’re getting close and can drive down to a specific date."

Marte seemed more certain that it was going to be sooner rather than later.

"I know if Torey was to ask me to play today I'd be ready," Marte said. "I'd say within about three or four days I should be ready. Today we were able to run at a better speed and I think I'm already at close to 100 percent."

Whether Marte goes on a Minor League rehab assignment or not remains to be seen. He's been hitting for a while now against pitchers at Salt River Fields, where the D-backs have their alternate training site.

Lovullo in the past has preferred having his players actually go to a Minor League affiliate before returning.

Walker injured
First baseman Christian Walker left Tuesday night’s 11-3 win over the Marlins in the seventh inning with some discomfort in his right oblique muscle.

After the game, Lovullo said that Walker was being re-evaluated.

Walker had been on the injured list with a strained right oblique from April 12 until May 3.
