Montero dominates Rox with a 'Maddux' in first shutout

DETROIT -- became the first Tiger to throw a shutout since Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter in 2021, supported by three runs and three RBIs from in the Tigers’ 11-0 win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

The Tigers’ largest shutout win at Comerica Park since 2022 continued their late-season charge into the American League Wild Card race. Detroit entered the evening three games behind Minnesota for the final spot, albeit without the tiebreaker advantage.

Montero (5-6) became the first Tiger to throw a nine-inning complete game since Turnbull, who no-hit the Mariners on May 18, 2021. All three Rockies baserunners reached on singles, and all were erased on double plays, allowing Montero to face the minimum 27 batters, becoming the first Tiger to face the minimum 27 batters since Justin Verlander’s no-hitter on May 7, 2011. He used just 96 pitches in the process, becoming the first Tiger to throw a “Maddux” -- a shutout with less than 100 pitches -- since David Price blanked Cleveland on 93 pitches on June 12, 2015.
