Malloy ends inside-the-parker by tackling home plate

ANAHEIM -- hit the Tigers’ first inside-the-park home run since 2021 to help Detroit to a 7-6 victory on Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium.

Malloy’s moment was punctuated by his slide into home plate. He face-planted and walked away with a small cut on his chin and upper lip.

“I think everyone saw me tackle home plate,” Malloy said with a laugh. “I just ran out of gas.”

Malloy’s inside-the-parker against veteran left-hander Tyler Anderson was the Tigers’ first since Victor Reyes hit one at home on Aug. 27, 2021 vs. Toronto. It was also the first one at Angel Stadium since the Angels’ Tommy La Stella on June 25, 2019, vs. Cincinnati.

“Once I picked up Joey [Cora, Detroit’s third base coach] and he’s waving me, I was like, ‘Oh, God,’” said Malloy, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Tigers’ No. 6 prospect. “It’s always fun [hitting] an inside-the-park homer, so I’m happy I was able to do it. I don’t know the last time I’ve ever hit one.”

It marked the fifth inside-the-park home run in the Major Leagues this season, as Malloy joined the Reds' Elly De La Cruz and Stuart Fairchild, the Rangers' Wyatt Langford and the Brewers' Jackson Chourio to achieve the feat.

The Tigers followed Malloy’s fourth-inning homer with a three-run drive by Carson Kelly an inning later to build a seven-run lead that proved necessary to avoid a four-game sweep. The Angels homered twice in the ninth inning to pull within a run.

Kelly didn’t think his home run would end up being the difference in the game.

“Definitely a great swing. I got a pitch over the middle, executed it,” Kelly said. “A win’s a win. It doesn’t matter what it looks like.”

Right-hander Casey Mize allowed just three hits across 5 1/3 scoreless innings before he exited the game with a cramp in his left hamstring. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Mize was taken out as a precaution and will undergo further evaluations.

The Tigers snapped a four-game skid. They have an off-day on Monday before opening a three-game series in Minnesota.

“You can’t complain about a win, especially with how things have gone,” Hinch said. “We’re going to get out of here with a win, get on the plane, happy flight, get an off-day. We obviously needed the win, no matter how it comes.”
