MIAMI -- The intention on Thursday afternoon was to get more than one inning of relief from Junichi Tazawa.
But after the 31-year-old right-hander was roughed up for the second consecutive game, the Marlins designated the veteran reliever for assignment following their 7-0 loss to the Dodgers at Marlins Park.
Miami also optioned right-hander Tyler Cloyd, who threw five innings of scoreless relief on Thursday, to Triple-A New Orleans.

Two corresponding pitching moves will be made on Friday, prior to the Marlins opening a three-game series at Atlanta.
Tazawa has had a rough go this season. The veteran appeared in 20 games and posted a 9.00 ERA, allowing 21 runs (20 earned) in 20 innings. Of the 28 hits he permitted, six were home runs, including a solo shot to Yasiel Puig on Thursday in the fourth inning.
The Marlins signed Tazawa to a two-year, $12 million contract before the 2017 season. His base salary this season is $7 million.
Tazawa broke in with the Red Sox in 2009, and Thursday was his 380th big league appearance.
The Marlins took two of three from the Dodgers, and entered Thursday with a chance for a sweep. But after Caleb Smith was charged with four runs in three innings, Tazawa entered in the fourth inning and allowed another three runs.
On Wednesday, in a 6-5 Miami win, Tazawa allowed three runs in one-third of an inning.
Tazawa needed 32 pitches to get through the fourth frame Thursday, and Cloyd replaced him in the fifth. Because Cloyd threw 83 pitches over five innings of scoreless relief, he won't be available for long relief for a few days. So he was optioned to New Orleans.
"I was trying to get more than one [inning from Tazawa]," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said after Thursday's loss. "But obviously, when you get that many pitches in an inning, you can't do that."
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
