SAN DIEGO -- Atlanta placed right-hander Julio Teheran on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a thumb contusion he sustained in an at-bat on Monday night, a move that might cost him only one start.
Even if Teheran is out a bit longer, the Braves should not be forced into any uncomfortable pitching moves because of the schedule. Atlanta has a day off on both sides of a three-game series against the Dodgers that begins Friday in Los Angeles, and it also is off June 18.
Teheran was hit in the hand with a pitch while grounding out against Clayton Richard on Monday, and he left after a four-pitch walk to the only batter he faced in the fifth inning. Tests showed no structural damage.
"There's no sense of pushing it right now," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "If it's going to be sore, it's going to bother him. Just let him get better. We'll see how he is. Hopefully he'll miss a start and be back at 'em. Not to say we have to."
With the off-days, Sean Newcomb could pitch on regular rest in the last game of the Dodgers series on Sunday if the Braves choose to go that way after discussions the next several days.
In that case, Mike Foltynewicz could pitch on five days' rest for the first game of the Mets' series Tuesday and Brandon McCarthy and Anibal Sanchez would be on regular rest through next Thursday. Teheran is eligible to return the next day, June 15.
Former top draft pick Mike Soroka also could figure in, Snitker said. Soroka is scheduled to make a second rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday after retiring all 11 hitters he faced his first start for Class A Rome last Friday.
"I think after he starts [Wednesday], he'll be good to go by then, provided everything goes well," Snitker said.
"He wouldn't have to make another [rehab start]. He'll go extended tomorrow and be in line to go 85, 90 pitches at this point, which is all you are probably looking for out of him anyway first time out [back in the Majors]."
Soroka, 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in three Atlanta starts, has been on the 10-day disabled list with a strained shoulder since mid-May.
