O's bring back Teheran on Minor League deal
TORONTO -- The Orioles have added needed rotation depth in the form of a familiar arm.
Julio Teheran signed a Minor League contract with Baltimore on Tuesday and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.
This marks the second time that Teheran has inked a Minors deal with the O’s, who previously signed the veteran right-hander on Feb. 28 and invited him to big league Spring Training. The 33-year-old recorded a 3.38 ERA in five Grapefruit League games (four starts) before opting out of his deal near the end of camp.
Teheran has made one big league appearance in 2024. He allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings on April 8 in a start for the Mets at Atlanta. He was designated for assignment by New York the next day.
On April 18, Teheran signed a Minor League deal with the Cubs. He had an 8.82 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Iowa before electing to become a free agent on June 1.
A 13-year big league veteran, Teheran owns a 3.85 ERA in 255 career games (248 starts). His best years came with the Braves from 2013-19 (3.64 ERA in 222 starts). From ‘11-16, he was managed by Fredi González, who is now the Orioles’ bench coach.
Baltimore recently lost a pair of starters for the remainder of the year. Left-hander John Means underwent Tommy John surgery on Monday -- his second time undergoing the procedure -- while right-hander Tyler Wells is also scheduled to soon undergo season-ending UCL surgery.
Despite having five starters spend time on the injured list this year, the Orioles entered Tuesday with a 3.09 rotation ERA that ranked third in MLB behind the Phillies (2.71) and Yankees (2.78).
As of now, the O’s rotation consists of Corbin Burnes, Kyle Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez, Cole Irvin and Albert Suárez. But Teheran could factor into the mix at some point.
