Rodriguez, 13 prospects on fall league roster
SEATTLE -- Outfielder Julio Rodriguez, the Mariners’ No. 2 ranked prospect -- who has been sidelined since July with a fractured left wrist -- was among 40 players invited by the club to participate in a 24-game Developmental Fall League schedule over the next six weeks.
Rodriguez had been working out with the Mariners at their alternate training site, but he didn’t participate in any intrasquad games while recovering from the injury. He’s now full healthy and expected to take part in games and workouts starting Thursday in Arizona.
“Julio is the player I'm most confident will get the most out of this offseason,” general manager Jerry Dipoto said. “He's ready to go. He worked as hard as you can work [following his injury]. He didn't get a single at-bat through the taxi games down in Tacoma, but was able to do his rehab and is now cleared for all baseball activities.”
The 24-game schedule will run through Nov. 11, with the Mariners playing teams from the Royals, Padres and Rangers in either Peoria or Surprise, Ariz., the two Spring Training sites for those four clubs.
With no Minor League season this year, the Mariners are combining their normal offseason high-performance camp with an instructional league-type schedule to allow some of their younger players to get some action.
Fourteen of the Mariners’ Top 30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, are on the roster, including right-hander Emerson Hancock (No. 3), the club’s first-round Draft pick in June. Outfielder Taylor Trammell (No. 5), who was acquired from the Padres as part of a seven-player trade on Aug. 30, will be taking part as well.
Other ranked prospects on the team are shortstop Noelvi Marte (No. 7), catcher Cal Raleigh (8), outfielder Zach DeLoach (12), right-hander Connor Phillips (13), right-hander Juan Then (14), right-hander Sam Carlson (15), third baseman Joe Rizzo (21), right-hander Wyatt Mills (24), left-hander Jose Corniell (26), right-hander Tim Elliott (28) and infielder Kaden Polcovich (29).
All six players selected in last June’s Draft will take part, with Hancock, DeLoach, Phillips and Polcovich being joined by infielder Tyler Keenan and right-hander Taylor Dollard. Catcher Matt Scheffler, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent following the Draft, is also part of the team.
The Fall League games and camp workouts will not be open to the public, due to COVID-19 protocols.
