X-rays negative, but J-Rod (wrist) headed to IL
HOUSTON -- Mariners standout rookie Julio Rodríguez is headed to the injured list with a right wrist injury, manager Scott Servais said on Sunday.
X-rays were negative after Rodríguez was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning of Saturday's game, but continued swelling and weakness in his wrist will prevent him from swinging a bat for at least five days. The rookie tried to swing a bat after he was plunked, but he noted it “felt weird right away,” which led to him being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth.
The next step for Rodríguez will be to get more imaging done on the hand, including an MRI, but the Mariners made it clear they will not rush him back.
“We will do everything the right way to make sure that he and our medical staff have a clear idea of what it is,” Servais said.
It seems as if the Mariners dodged any serious injury, as Rodríguez has full range of motion but not the grip strength or “vibration off the bat.”
Rodríguez feared the worst when the incident happened, as he has gone through a similar situation before in 2019, when he was hit by a pitch and fractured his left hand in Class A.
“I was frustrated, because I wanted to play and support the team in any way I can,” Rodríguez said. “The way I view it is that God knows better. He has a better plan for us, so I have to get my hand better and get back on the field when I can.”
Rodríguez, a front-runner for AL Rookie of the Year, has hit .271/.334/.482 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 96 games this season.
Outfielder Dylan Moore is also headed to the IL after exiting Saturday's game with back spasms. Seattle recalled outfielders Jarred Kelenic and Jack Larsen from Triple-A Tacoma and Double-A Arkansas, respectively, in corresponding moves.
