PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets won’t have to wait long to see their $765 million acquisition in action.
Juan Soto will be in the lineup Saturday when the Mets open their Grapefruit League schedule against an Astros split-squad, manager Carlos Mendoza said on Thursday. The team expects to have several regulars in the lineup for the 1:10 p.m. ET game at Clover Park, including Soto, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso.
The game will be broadcast locally in New York on SNY, with Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling in the booth, and on MLB.TV (with no blackout restrictions). A radio broadcast will also be available on Mets Radio 880 or to At Bat subscribers on the MLB App.
Another offseason acquisition, right-hander Clay Holmes, will start on the mound.
Soto, 26, joined the team on a 15-year, $765 million contract over the winter. He reported to his first Mets Spring Training on Sunday.
“I’m not trying to do more than what I have done in the past,” Soto said. “I’m just going to keep the same guy, try to do the same thing I’ve been doing year after year -- keep grinding, keep playing hard every day, and try to help the team to take it all the way.”
