MIAMI -- The Marlins have parted ways with four veteran coaches -- Juan Nieves (pitching), Perry Hill (first base/infield), Frank Menechino (assistant hitting) and Ty Hill (strength and conditioning). The contracts for all four were up, and the organization informed each on Monday that they would not be renewed.
Miam intends to retain the rest of manager Don Mattingly's staff in 2019.
Expected back are: Tim Wallach (bench), Mike Pagliarulo (hitting), Fredi Gonzalez (third base), Brian Schneider (catching), Dean Treanor (bullpen), Rob Flippo (bullpen coordinator) and Ed Lucas (administrative coach).
After finishing 63-98 in a season in which 24 rookies played, the organization will make some changes.
Miami ranked last in the Majors in many offensive categories, including runs scored (589), slugging percentage (.357) and OPS (.659).
Pitching-wise, the Marlins ranked 25th in team ERA (4.76), and their 605 walks were the fourth most, and they gave up the seventh-most runs (809).
Previously, the organization stated Mattingly will return. He is under contract through 2019, and in November will manage an MLB squad that will play Japanese All-Stars in Japan.
Perry Hill, 66, has long been regarded as one of the top infield instructors in the business, and he has been a fixture on the staff for more than a decade. The past six seasons he served as infield and first-base coach. He spent 12 seasons with the organization.
In their search for a replacement for Hill, the Marlins are believed to be looking to expand the role of the position. Their next infield coach may also handle baserunning.
Hill was the Marlins' infield coach in 2003 when the organization won its second World Series title. With the Marlins, he played a big part in the development of former Gold Glove winners Luis Castillo, Mike Lowell and Derrek Lee. The three were staples on that title team.
In 2015, Dee Gordon was the National League Gold Glove-winning second baseman. Formerly a shortstop, Gordon frequently credited Hill for helping him improve at second base.
Overall, Hill has coached five Gold Glove winners -- Castillo (second base, 2003-05), Lee (first base, 2003), Lowell (third base, 2005), Orlando Cabrera (shortstop, 2001) and Gordon (2015).
Hill coached Cabrera while with the Montreal Expos.
Nieves served as pitching coach the past three seasons, initially joining the staff in 2016.
In his first season with the organization, the Marlins' pitching staff had a club-record 1,379 strikeouts. That roster included Jose Fernandez.
Since Fernandez's death in September 2016, the Marlins have been rebuilding their rotation.
Menechino was the Marlins' hitting coach in 2014-15, and served as their assistant hitting coach the past three seasons. The 2017 Marlins, which featured outfielders Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich, belted 194 home runs, third most in a season in franchise history.
Ty Hill has been the strength and conditioning coach the past six seasons.
