CLEVELAND -- Indians outfielder Josh Naylor's surgery is scheduled for Friday.

After an original diagnosis of a fractured and dislocated ankle by the medical staff in Minneapolis, Naylor met with foot and ankle specialist Dr. Mark Berkowitz at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday. Berkowitz confirmed that Naylor suffered multiple fibula fractures and ligament tearing that need to be addressed surgically.

The injury occurred on Sunday at Target Field, and Naylor was rushed to the local emergency room to receive treatment. He remained in Minneapolis for the night for pain management and was able to fly back to Cleveland on Monday morning. He rested at his apartment until his appointment on Wednesday morning at the Clinic. The Indians will have a better idea of his return to activities after the procedure.

“I think it's hard,” Indians manager Terry Francona said on Monday about Naylor’s injury. “[He’ll] probably keep saying he's going to be back in a month. That's just his mentality, which I think will serve him well.”

Speaking of Naylor
Josh isn’t the only Naylor in the Indians’ organization, and the other one is drawing quite the attention heading into the All-Star break. It was announced on Wednesday that Josh’s younger brother, Cleveland's No. 3 prospect Bo Naylor, will represent the Indians at this year’s SiriusXM Futures Game in Denver on July 11.

“I think we all think he's really going to swing the bat,” Francona said of the younger Naylor at the end of Spring Training. “This kid's got a bright future. And I just told him that. I said, 'Hey man, go enjoy being young and seeing how good you can get.'

"You try to remind guys because sometimes they're in such a rush to get to the Major Leagues they forget what's right in front of them. Just said, 'Hey, go enjoy working hard and seeing how good you can be.' And I don't think he's going to have a problem with that.”

Miller added as 27th man
The Indians certainly have their work cut out for them with their pitching plans until the All-Star break, but seven-inning doubleheaders might make it easier to eat up those frames. So, the team decided to call on an infielder for the extra man for Wednesday's twin bill, adding Owen Miller back to the big league roster.

“I think we felt like looking at who’s going to play -- or who could potentially play -- the second game, he gives us versatility,” Francona said. “We know that in that second game -- [the Tigers] have four lefties in that bullpen. I think they’re using [Wily] Peralta, not necessarily as an opener, but he hasn’t gone maybe more than 2 1/3 innings so far, so there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to see a lefty in that game just to give us some balance. But mostly the idea that [Miller] can play four different infield positions.”
