Homer derails Ureña's run of quality starts

Right-hander yields 5 earned runs across 5 1/3 frames in loss to Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- José Ureña was primed for another quality start in a Rockies uniform, his fourth in as many games. But after allowing a three-run home run in the fourth inning, Ureña's outing turned upside down.

The right-hander’s five earned runs and the offense’s struggles led to the Rockies’ third straight loss -- 9-4 against the Brewers on Saturday night at American Family Field.

“I felt pretty good,” Ureña said. “I just think tonight, I was just one pitch [away] with [Hunter] Renfroe. He got a good pitch and he hit a homer.”

Ureña has made the most of his opportunities since he signed a Minor League contract with Colorado on May 19. After spending two-plus weeks in Arizona getting built up to be a starter and making five starts for Triple-A Albuquerque, the flamethrower was called up on July 6.

And it’s been a couple of solid outings for Ureña in the big leagues.

Through his first three starts for the Rockies this year, the 30-year-old allowed just three runs across 18 2/3 innings, including quality starts against the Dodgers, Padres and Pirates.

“He’s pitched great,” manager Bud Black said pregame. “I think it centers around the fastball, fastball command, and fastball with velocity down in the strike zone. I think that’s been probably the biggest factor of success that I’ve seen pitching guys. And he’s got a good one. It’s got movement and he’s producing some ground balls. He’s throwing strikes.”

Early on against Milwaukee, it appeared Ureña was on his way to another solid outing. He held the Brewers scoreless through three innings, struck out four and yielded just two hits. But, then he ran into trouble over his last 2 1/3 innings by giving up three runs in the fourth -- on the three-run shot by Renfroe -- and three more in the sixth.

“He walked [Andrew] McCutchen with two outs after a double play, ill-advised,” Black said. “Then a base hit by Kolten [Wong], then the home run on a pitcher’s pitch. Sometimes you got to give credit to the opposition. But overall not a lot of difference [between the first three innings and the last 2 1/3].”

Added Ureña on the homer: “That was a little high. The plan was to go back and forth, in and out. We tried the bottom of the zone. But he put a good piece on it.”

Ureña’s final line was 5 1/3 innings, six hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks to go with five strikeouts.

“I thought he threw the ball fine,” Black said. “You know the line’s not going to indicate how I thought he threw the ball. I thought his stuff was good and he kept the ball down.”

Ureña endured his first struggles this season in a Rockies uniform. But his potential to add to this rotation, which has the third-highest ERA in the Majors at 5.05, is much needed for Colorado going forward.

In his first three starts, Ureña showed that he can produce quality starts and give the team a chance to win when he’s on the mound. Saturday just wasn’t his night to show that.

“I thought overall he threw similar to what he’s done in the past, the previous three,” Black said. “[Renfroe] golfed it and he has power.”

On top of Ureña’s outing, Colorado’s offense continued to struggle on the road. The Rockies rank bottom three in the Majors away from Coors Field in slugging (.340), home runs (27), runs (136) and OPS (.631). Those inconsistencies have hurt the team in this series.

After going 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position and leaving 12 runners on base in Friday’s extra-innings loss, only six Rockies -- four hits, one walk and one on a fielding error -- reached base in the first eight innings on Saturday. After José Iglesias scored on Brendan Rodgers’ RBI single in the first inning, 10 straight Colorado hitters were set down.

The Rockies did add three runs -- homers by C.J. Cron and Yonathan Daza -- in the ninth, an inning that produced three extra-base hits. Hopefully, the team can carry that offensive power into Sunday’s game.

“We got a pretty good team,” Daza said. “I think wins are going to come pretty soon. Everyone is doing the best they can and we’re almost there.”
