ARLINGTON -- Catcher Sam Huff will be the next player to make his Major League debut for the Rangers this season after Jose Trevino sustained a sprained left wrist in Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Angels on Wednesday night at Globe Life Field.

Trevino, currently the Rangers' No. 1 catcher, sustained the injury on an awkward swing in the fourth inning. X-rays were negative for a fracture, but he is still expected to miss at least a few games, leaving the Rangers without a second catcher alongside veteran Jeff Mathis.

“I don't know how long he's going to be out,” manager Chris Woodward said on Wednesday. “I think it may only be a couple days, but obviously, we have to get somebody here. We can't have Mathis without a backup.”

Huff was at the Rangers' alternate training site along with veterans Nick Ciuffo and Tim Federowicz. Huff is the club's No. 2 prospect, and while he hasn’t played above Class A, the Rangers have already shown their willingness to give their young players a chance in September.

“I think we would definitely consider that,” Woodward said after Wednesday's win. “I don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities, and obviously [general manager Jon Daniels] and I will discuss it.”

Woodward said if Huff is called up, he would get playing time.

“I wouldn’t bring him up if we are not going to play him,” Woodward said.

Trevino was batting against Angels starter Julio Teheran when he swung awkwardly at an 0-1 slider. Trevino backed out of the box in obvious pain and he was visited by trainer Matt Lucero before being taken out of the game.
