ST. LOUIS -- Jose Martinez exited Sunday afternoon’s 11-9 win over the Pirates at Busch Stadium in the top of the fifth inning with right shoulder discomfort. Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Martinez is day-to-day and will be evaluated again Monday.

Before he was removed from the game, Martinez made a catch on a deep fly from Elias Diaz and his shoulder made contact with the wall. That catch pinched the joint in Martinez’s shoulder and caused him “really bad” pain.

“I almost stopped the game,” Martinez said. “But I hope everything feels better tomorrow and we can try to put it behind [me].”

Dexter Fowler replaced Martinez in right field and took the second spot in the batting order.

Martinez was 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout in his first start against the Pirates this weekend. His fielding error on Josh Bell’s single in the top of the third inning scored Bryan Reynolds, which broke a 2-2 tie at the time.

The right fielder has battled an August slump, going 3-for-21 in eight games since the beginning of the month. This season, he is slashing .267/.335/.402.

Depending on the pain in Martinez’s shoulder Monday, he could have imaging done, Shildt said. The injury is causing Martinez pain only when he throws, so he could avoid the injured list, especially as the Cardinals will be able to use a designated hitter when they play the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday.

“It can [play a factor],” Shildt said. “Obviously, if he’s going to be out a couple of days, we’re not just going to play short to play short with National League games after that. He can hit. It looks like it’ll be day-to-day, nothing too serious we don’t think.”
