Mateo undergoes elbow surgery, shut down for rest of '24

August 28th, 2024

The Orioles will officially be without one of their veteran infielders for the rest of 2024.

Second baseman and shortstop Jorge Mateo -- already on the 60-day injured list -- underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas. Dr. Keith Meister performed the procedure, a left UCL reconstruction with internal brace and flexor repair.

Mateo was originally placed on the 10-day IL on July 25 and transferred to the 60-day IL five days later. He was eligible to return in late September, but Wednesday’s procedure means Mateo will not be back for the regular season or postseason.

The 29-year-old started 52 games at second base, three at shortstop and two in center field for the Orioles in 2024 before suffering his injury in a collision with Gunnar Henderson on July 24 in Miami. Mateo batted .229/.267/.401 with five home runs, 18 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 208 plate appearances. He is under contract through the 2025 season.

While Baltimore will miss Mateo’s speed and experience, the Orioles are currently set at second base with rookie Jackson Holliday -- MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect -- manning the keystone. Holliday is hitting .221 with five homers and a .722 OPS since being called back up from Triple-A Norfolk on July 31.
