As a five-tool shortstop from a Dallas-area high school, Jordan Lawlar inevitably draws parallels to Bobby Witt Jr., the No. 2 overall pick in 2019 by the Royals. Lawlar is a polished hitter with a quick, compact right-handed swing and a mature, patient approach, though he struck out more than expected as a senior. His plus speed plays well on the bases and in the field, and he'll even clock some well-above-average run times on occasion. With plenty of range, quick hands and a strong arm, there’s no doubt he’ll stick at shortstop, though like most youngsters he needs to improve his consistency.

Aug. 18: Swipes home in unconventional way
When a prospect boasts the stature that the D-backs' Jordan Lawlar does (MLB Pipeline’s No. 13 overall), a considerable amount of pomp follows. But as the 20-year-old displayed in his latest outing, so does electric talent.

The third-ranked D-backs prospect got to work early in Hillsboro's 10-1 drubbing of Eugene. Lawlar, serving as the Hops’ DH, slashed a single to right field in the bottom of the first inning, then he showcased another tool -- his wheels.

Playing in his 27th game at High-A, Lawlar logged his 11th steal when he swiped second, advancing to third on a throwing error. That's when the real show began.

After the second pitch of an at-bat by Emeralds starter Mason Black missed outside the strike zone, Lawlar timed up the return throw from catcher Andy Thomas and sprinted toward the plate. Black’s attempt to thwart the sixth overall pick from the 2021 Draft went for naught, giving Lawlar the second steal of home in the Hops’ 10-year history.

The feat was last accomplished for the Hops by Ricky Martinez on May 21, 2021. In total, Lawlar has amassed 36 stolen bases across 71 games between Hillsboro and Single-A Visalia. Including a brief stint in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League, the shortstop has slashed .324/.418/.541 with 35 extra-base hits this season. Gameday »

After nearly hitting for the cycle and homering in his Single-A swan song, Jordan Lawlar made his presence known immediately for High-A Hillsboro.

Baseball's No. 17 overall prospect singled, stole a base and scored in his first inning with the Hops. Lawlar added an RBI groundout in his next at-bat as Hillsboro topped visiting Eugene, 5-3.

Although he spent time on the injured list last month, Lawlar left Single-A Visalia with a .365/.465/.612 slash line, 23 extra-base hits, 31 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 47 games.

July 3: Lawlar homers, finishes triple shy of cycle
Jordan Lawlar has been one of the Minors' hottest hitters all season, but even the best have droughts to end.

Baseball's No. 17 overall prospect slugged his eighth homer, scored three times and finished a triple shy of the cycle in Single-A Visalia's 16-4 loss to Rancho Cucamonga. Lawlar reached the seats for the first time since May 21, a streak that included a stint on the injured list which limited him to five games with the Rawhide last month.

June 25: Lawlar doubles in three-hit effort for Visalia
After suffering a back injury that's kept him sidelined since May 22, Jordan Lawlar has picked up right where he left off at Single-A.

Arizona’s No. 2 prospect (MLB No. 18) has collected five hits in his first two games back with Visalia, including a three-hit, two-RBI effort in the Rawhide’s 10-1 win over Inland Empire. Lawlar lined a single to left in the first, notched an infield hit in the second and smoked a double to left in the seventh to raise his average up to .368 through 41 games.

The sixth overall pick of last year’s Draft, the 19-year-old Lawlar has a 1.101 OPS to go along with seven homers, 18 extra-base hits, 19 steals, 24 RBIs and 26 walks in his first full professional season.

June 14: Lawlar collects five knocks in rehab game
Jordan Lawlar appeared in his second rehab game since going on the injured list on May 25, and the third-ranked D-backs prospect did not appear to be hindered at all as he collected five hits for the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League D-backs Red club in a 10-8 victory over the ACL Rockies.

Lawlar fell a homer shy of a cycle as he tripled, doubled and singled three times while scoring three runs and driving in two more.

MLB.com's No. 19 overall prospect was sporting a .352/.461/.600 slash line with seven homers, three triples, four doubles, 30 runs scored, 21 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 33 games for Single-A Visalia before his injury.
