CHICAGO -- For the second year in a row, the D-backs are calling up their top prospect late in the season, with shortstop Jordan Lawlar joining the team in Chicago for his MLB debut in tonight’s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Where will Lawlar bat in the lineup?
The 21-year-old is batting eighth and playing shortstop in his MLB debut. Right-hander Javier Assad is pitching for the Cubs.

What position will Lawlar play?
Lawlar is primarily a shortstop, but this past week he began taking some grounders at third and played in his first pro game there recently as well. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said that Lawlar will start games at shortstop against all left-handed pitchers and may see some time at third.

Why is this happening now?
The D-backs have not been getting a lot of production from the left side of the infield of late with shortstop Nick Ahmed starting (and struggling) against left-handers this year. As they battle for a Wild Card spot, the D-backs hope that Lawlar can help out their offense.

How highly is Lawlar rated?
MLB Pipeline ranks Lawlar as the D-backs' No. 1 prospect and the No. 10 overall prospect in baseball. Selected sixth overall out of high school in 2021, Lawlar has climbed quickly through the Arizona organization.

Will he play every day?
Lovullo said that Lawlar would start against all left-handed pitchers and he could also see some time against right-handers if the D-backs choose to play him at third or slide shortstop Geraldo Perdomo over to third and put Lawlar at short.

“He'll be the starting shortstop,” Lovullo said Wednesday. “And then I just want to inject him into the lineup when I can for the right matchup in the right situation.”

Who will have to move in the infield to make room?
In what was not an easy conversation, the D-backs designated Ahmed for assignment following Wednesday’s game. Ahmed was the longest-tenured D-backs player and had been the primary starter at shortstop against left-handers. Perdomo should still see plenty of playing time.

What number will Lawlar wear?
Lawlar will No. 10, which was last worn by infielder Josh Rojas before he was dealt to the Mariners at the Trade Deadline. Lawlar becomes the 12th player to wear that number for the D-backs, including Justin Upton, who wore it for six seasons from 2007-12.
