Phillies call up defensive whiz CF Rojas from Double-A
PHILADELPHIA -- Johan Rojas is a brilliant defensive center fielder who is having the best year of his career offensively.
On Friday, it earned him a promotion to the big leagues.
The Phillies promoted Rojas from Double-A Reading before their series opener against the Padres at Citizens Bank Park. Rojas is the Phillies’ No. 6 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He replaces outfielder Cristian Pache, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with right elbow irritation, retroactive to Tuesday.
Rojas, 22, is a Gold Glove-caliber center fielder who is batting .306 with 20 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 45 RBIs, 30 stolen bases and an .845 OPS in 354 plate appearances with Reading.
The Phillies also recalled infielder Drew Ellis from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He replaces infielder Josh Harrison, whom the team placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a bruised left wrist.
