Bart drawing Bochy's attention from Minors
SAN FRANCISCO -- Manager Bruce Bochy admitted that he's keeping tabs on top Giants prospect Joey Bart, who has enjoyed a sizzling start to the season with Class A Advanced San Jose.
Bart, the second overall pick in last June's Draft, crushed his second home run of the year -- a two-run shot that traveled an estimated 402 feet -- en route to a three-hit performance for San Jose on Thursday. The 22-year-old catcher entered Friday batting .321 (9-for-28) with a 1.085 OPS over seven games.
"You can't help but notice," Bochy said. "I get the reports. He's really playing great baseball. I talked to [San Jose manager] Billy Hayes yesterday, and he just said he's playing great on both sides. Swinging the bat well, but he said the catching and throwing -- he's just really shined the whole time down there. We've got a good one here, and he's doing what he should be doing. He's playing great ball."
Bart impressed during his first big league camp with the Giants this spring, batting .350 (7-for-20) with a .981 OPS, one home run and seven RBIs over 15 Cactus League games. He wasn't sent down to Minor League camp until the club's final week in Arizona, allowing him to spend almost the entire spring under the tutelage of Buster Posey and the rest of the Giants' veterans.
"I'll say we probably kept him a little longer than normal, but we were giving him playing time, so he was getting a lot of experience playing with us," Bochy said. "He's going to be on a fast pace to get up here."
If Bart advances at a similar pace that Posey did, he could be in the Majors by September. The Giants haven't ruled out that possibility, though they also want to give their prized prospect the proper time to develop in the Minors.
"Let's give the kid some time here," Bochy said. "We'll see what happens this year. He's gotten off to a great start."
Worth noting
• Posey received a routine day off Friday, with Erik Kratz starting behind the plate against the Rockies. Posey is expected to return to the lineup for Saturday's day game.
• Bochy said veteran catcher Stephen Vogt has been playing well with Triple-A Sacramento. Vogt, 34, agreed to open the season in the Minors to give himself more time to work his way back from shoulder surgery. The Giants will have to make a call on Vogt by his June 1 opt-out date, but Bochy said a decision is likely to take place before then.
