HOUSTON -- Longtime New England Sports Network television color analyst Jerry Remy will become one of nine individuals to be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame on Sept. 28, the Hall of Fame announced on Friday.
Remy, 64, played for Red Sox from 1978-84 before a knee injury forced his retirement during Spring Training of '86. Remy has been in the NESN booth as a color analyst since '88.
"I was quite surprised when they gave me the call a couple of weeks ago," Remy said in the booth Friday in Houston. "Then they finally announced it. Hey, I'll take it. I don't know if I deserve it, but I'll take it. It's something I'm very proud of."
On Monday, Remy announced he had lung cancer for the fourth time. Remy, who was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, is scheduled to begin treatment within the next two weeks.
Remy, though, plans to "be just fine" and back in the booth after the All-Star break in mid-June, he told reporters in Boston earlier this week.
"We love Rem," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia earlier this week. "He's always around and treats us with respect. We're all pulling for him."
