Report: Mariners extend Dipoto to 2025 and potentially beyond

OAKLAND -- As the Mariners navigate their final stretch of the season, The Seattle Times reported on Thursday that the club will retain Jerry Dipoto as president of baseball operations in 2025 and potentially beyond.

The club has not confirmed the Times’ report or made an official announcement on Dipoto’s return -- as it had when he signed each of his previous two contract extensions. The organization has not disclosed contract specifics for players or team personnel, but it typically has in the past made formal announcements upon those agreements being reached.

The news on Dipoto’s return for 2025 comes two weeks after the club parted ways with manager Scott Servais, on the heels of a 1-8 road trip and a little over two months after it held a 10-game lead atop the American League West. It now sits 4 1/2 games out of the AL West race and five games out of the final AL Wild Card spot with 21 games to play. Seattle fell below .500 for the first time since late April earlier this week.

It’s believed that the decision to return Dipoto came before Servais’ dismissal, according to The Times. Franchise icon Dan Wilson was immediately named Servais’ replacement with no interim tag. Servais, the second-longest-tenured manager in team history behind only Lou Piniella, was hired by Dipoto one month after he was hired as general manager following the 2015 season.

Both Servais and Dipoto received contract extensions in 2018 and again in 2021, in the midst of seasons in which they finished above .500. The latter was the most recent contract announcement for Dipoto.
