This is how Estrada's strikeout streak ends?
KANSAS CITY -- Jeremiah Estrada's streak of 13 consecutive strikeouts ended in bizarre fashion on Friday -- with an intentional walk.
Estrada came on in the sixth inning of a 2-2 game against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium with runners at second and third and one out. But before he could throw a pitch, the Padres elected to intentionally walk Salvador Perez, meaning Estrada never had a chance to keep the streak going.
The righty threw just three pitches in his outing, getting Nelson Velázquez to fly out to center on a sacrifice fly and MJ Melendez to pop out to third base.
Estrada had fanned five consecutive Reds, five consecutive Yankees and three Marlins hitters to run the streak to 13, which was the expansion era record. After Friday's outing he now holds a 0.53 ERA across 17 innings, striking out 28.
The righty who was claimed off waivers in November has quickly been placed into high-leverage situations with the Padres, but Estrada has taken a low-key approach to his outings: "I just feel like I did my job," Estrada had said on Tuesday. He did his job again on Friday, limiting the damage and getting the Padres out of the inning, but expanding the record proved to be beyond his control.
