Eickhoff (nerve irritation) to DL; Pinto recalled
A return in 2017 in doubt for right-hander
MIAMI -- As expected, the Phillies placed right-hander Jerad Eickhoff on the 10-day DL and recalled right-hander Ricardo Pinto from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The 27-year-old Eickhoff exited after two innings in his most recent start on Wednesday against the Braves with nerve irritation in his right hand. He went through tests and evaluations on Thursday, and it is unclear if he'll pitch again this season.
In 24 starts, Eickhoff has gone 4-8 with a 4.71 ERA along with 118 strikeouts in 128 innings. His average fastball velocity had dropped from 91.5 mph from 2015-16 to 90.4 mph this season. It averaged 89.4 mph in six August starts.
With Eickhoff down, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said he wasn't sure who would take his spot in the rotation. One option, when rosters expand on Friday, could be the recently signed Henderson Alvarez. He's 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts at Lehigh Valley.
"I haven't heard a word on him," Mackanin said. "I don't know."
Pinto has logged an 8.22 ERA in 17 appearances spanning 23 innings for the Phillies this year. He compiled a 5-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in 19 outings (eight starts) for Triple-A.
