Weeks out 2-3 weeks with hamstring strain
MILWAUKEE -- Padres infielder Jemile Weeks will be sidelined for at least two to three weeks after an MRI confirmed a right hamstring strain.
Weeks was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday after injuring his hamstring running to first base on a bunt attempt during a 6-3 loss to the Mets on Saturday.
"We're going to re-evaluate at the end of [the two to three weeks] and see what kind of progress he's made," Padres manager Andy Green said before Thursday's series opener at Miller Park. "He's kind of in the club right now of infielders with hamstring strains. That's not what you want to hear."
With Padres infielders Alexi Amarista and Yangervis Solarte also on the disabled list with hamstring strains, Weeks found himself with a chance at regular playing time. Weeks had started 17 games at second base, hitting .140 with just two extra-base hits in 57 plate appearances.
"I know it is hard for him because he was sitting in a position of opportunity," Green said. "He played tremendous defense. As far as I'm concerned, Gold Glove-caliber defense at second base. It hurts for him, hurts for us to have him out that much longer. He'll start the rehab process and hopefully get back."
Called up when Weeks went on the disabled list, Jose Pirela is expected to see the majority of time at second base while San Diego is down three infielders.
"I think this is kind of who we are right now until we get Amarista or Solarte back," Green said. "You'll see Pirela at second base quite a bit. You'll see Rosales there some.
"This wasn't the infield design we had when leaving Spring Training, but these guys are taking advantage of their opportunity, playing good baseball and competing, and fighting every day to try to give us a chance to win."
