Jazz OK after early exit, 'ready to go'
Speedster injures right shoulder in first inning on collision while caught stealing
MIAMI -- The Marlins dodged a serious injury after a scary moment involving Jazz Chisholm Jr. in Wednesday afternoon's 5-2 win over the Twins at loanDepot park.
When Chisholm attempted to steal second base following a leadoff single in the first inning, right-hander Pablo López stepped off the mound and threw to second baseman Kyle Farmer, whose left shin collided with Chisholm on his headfirst slide.
Chisholm was on the ground in pain and he was slow to get up after being attended to by the training staff, but he walked off the field on his own power. He felt numbness and tingling halfway back to the dugout, then was able to squeeze his hand when he went inside. Chisholm compared the sensation to when one’s arm falls asleep and the feeling rushes back.
Diagnosed with a stinger in his right shoulder, Chisholm texted manager Skip Schumaker after the game that he was ready to go for Thursday’s series opener against the Mets at Citi Field.
“It was the first time I think I've ever experienced anything like that,” Chisholm said. “I slid into him. I felt it. I felt my head a little bit, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I'm fine.’ I've run into something before, collision or [otherwise]. Went to turn over and was not feeling my arms. My neck started getting stiff, and I just panicked for the first time I've ever had that.
“[It was] numbness and tingling, and I couldn't lift my arms to get up by myself, so that's when I really started freaking out. Because I rolled over the first time to push myself up, but I couldn't push myself up. So [it] just like scared me a little bit.”
Bryan De La Cruz took over for Chisholm in center field in the second inning, and he hit the go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the eighth.
The injuries have begun to pile up for Miami, who placed shortstop Joey Wendle on the 10-day injured list with a right intercostal strain and right-hander Johnny Cueto on the 15-day IL with right biceps tightness on Tuesday. Jon Berti will get the majority of the starts at short in Wendle's absence, while southpaw Braxton Garrett will join the rotation.
Miami needs Chisholm to stay healthy. The All-Star was limited to 60 games last season with a stress fracture in his lower back, and he later underwent surgery to repair his right meniscus.
“[At first] I didn't know if it was a shoulder,” Schumaker said. “You see the shoulder a lot in headfirst slides at second, so you're just kind of concerned about obviously that part of it. Once [I heard more], I kind of had an idea that it could be a type of stinger, and luckily that was the case.”
