ARLINGTON -- For the first time in more than a decade, a Red Sox player went deep at the All-Star Game. And it happened in impressive, MVP-winning fashion.

Boston outfielder won the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet by slugging a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning of the 94th Midsummer Classic on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field. The Statcast-projected 413-foot homer off an 0-1 splitter from Reds right-hander Hunter Greene gave the American League a 5-3 lead it never relinquished.

Duran became the first Red Sox player to hit an All-Star homer since Adrián González in 2011. The 27-year-old Duran also became the youngest Boston slugger with a home run in the Midsummer Classic since Fred Lynn went deep in the 1979 game, also when he was 27.

Five Red Sox players have won All-Star Game MVP, including two since the award was named in honor of the Hall of Famer Williams in 2002. Duran joined outfielder J.D. Drew (‘08), right-hander Pedro Martinez (1999), right-hander Roger Clemens (‘86) and outfielder Carl Yastrzemski (‘70).

The AL scored five unanswered runs after falling behind, 3-0, and Duran helped get homer revenge for one of his Red Sox teammates in the process.

Boston right-hander Tanner Houck gave up a three-run jack to the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani in the top of the third, before the AL responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. That was the only damage against Houck, who struck out the Brewers’ William Contreras to cap his inning of work.

Duran’s home run came in his first career All-Star Game plate appearance. He had a stellar first half of the season, during which he slashed .284/.342/.477 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 95 games. Duran also leads the AL in both doubles (27) and triples (10).
