Samurai Japan continued its Olympic dominance in its final game of the group stage, taking down Mexico 7-4 to secure the top seed in Group A.

The game was close to start, as Japan was hanging on to a 2-1 lead after three innings, but Tetsuto Yamada launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning to stretch the lead and the Japanese never looked back. Yamada ended the game with four RBIs and a stolen base on two hits.

Hayato Sakamoto added a solo homer in the seventh to help put the game out of reach. Hideto Asamura and Takuya Kai each drove in a run of their own, both on singles.

Joey Meneses was the lone bright spot for Mexico’s offense, driving in three runs on a solo homer and a single in a 3-for-4 performance. Mexico added another run on a double play hit by 15-year MLB veteran Adrián González in the fourth.

Morishita Masato looked a little shaky early on, as the Japanese starter threw a wild pitch and gave up a run in the first inning, but he quickly settled into the game and turned in a solid start. The righty went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Hiromi Itoh came on in relief and tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two. Ryoji Kuribayashi put the game on ice for Japan, working a perfect ninth for the save.

Group stage play will conclude on July 31, as the United States will take on South Korea at 6 a.m. ET. The knockout stages will begin at 11 p.m. ET.
