The White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Jace Fry on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Saturday, with left shoulder soreness, purchased the contract of right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne from Triple-A Charlotte and released outfielder Nicky Delmonico ahead of Monday's series opener against the Nationals.

Despaigne, 32, is scheduled to start tonight’s game vs. Washington. He is 3-3 with a 3.34 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 12 combined appearances (11 starts) this season with Charlotte and Class Triple-A Louisville in the Cincinnati organization. Despaigne, 6-foot and 200 pounds, signed with the Reds as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 28 before being released on May 16. He signed with the White Sox on May 19.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Despaigne split the 2018 season between the Marlins and Angels organizations, combining to go 2-3 with a 6.69 ERA and 35 strikeouts over 19 appearances (five starts).

Despaigne has gone 13-24 with a 4.94 ERA, one save and 217 strikeouts in 106 career games (47 starts) over five Major League seasons with the Padres (2014-15), Orioles (2016), Marlins (2016-18) and the Angels (2018). He signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on May 5, 2014.

Despaigne, who will wear uniform No. 25, will be the fourth native of Cuba to play for the White Sox this season, joining Jose Abreu, Yonder Alonso and Yoan Moncada. He will be the first Cuban pitcher to start for the Sox since Jose Contreras on Aug. 29, 2009.

Fry, 25, is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA, eight holds and 27 strikeouts over a team-high 28 appearances this season.

Delmonico, 26, underwent season-ending surgery on May 30 to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. He batted .227 (111-for-488) with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs in 152 games over parts of three seasons with the White Sox (2017-19).
