Picollo on KC's Deadline plans: 'We'll be aggressive'

June 23rd, 2024

The Royals haven’t made the playoffs or even finished a season with a winning record since their 2015 World Series title.

But as we near the season’s midway point -- as well as the July 30 Trade Deadline -- the Royals entered play Sunday holding on to the third American League Wild Card spot with a 42-36 record and in position to be buyers at the Deadline.

General manager J.J. Picollo said Sunday on MLB Network Radio that his club plans to be aggressive at the Deadline. Just how aggressive, however, remains to be seen.

"The thing we have to keep in mind is, I like to think that we're just getting into a window where we're going to have a nice handful of seasons,” Picollo said. “How far do we want to push this thing is something that we have to answer as a front office.

"But I will say that I feel an obligation personally to the guys that committed to this team and chose Kansas City, and to the Salvador Perezes and the Bobby Witts who have chosen be here long term to add to this club. So, we will be aggressive, and we’ll look at anything and everything."

As far as what the Royals will look to upgrade, the outfield seems to be a clear area of need. Kansas City’s outfielders headed into Sunday with a 71 wRC+, the worst in the Majors. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand recently highlighted a few outfielders who could be available to the Royals ahead of the Deadline.

On the mound, Kansas City’s relievers entered Sunday tied for 21st in ERA (4.43) and 25th in opponents’ OPS (.733). Picollo admitted that lengthening the lineup and bolstering the bullpen will be among the club’s priorities.

“If we can do that and be in a better spot going into the second half of the year,” Picollo said, “I'll be happy to do it.”
