BALTIMORE -- The Indians activated outfielder Michael Brantley from the paternity list and placed him on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to Friday) with a right ankle sprain, the club announced on Monday afternoon.
Brantley, who welcomed his third child with his wife, Melissa, on Thursday, has not played since Wednesday, when he went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs in a loss to the Dodgers.
"I mean, this has been bothering him for a while, and on Tuesday and Wednesday night, he did a ton of running," Francona said. "That's why I told him that Thursday, because his wife had a baby, and I said 'Hey, just go be with her.' It was not fun to not have him, but I thought it would be good for him."

Francona thought that the four days of rest would be enough for Brantley to recover and return to Cleveland's lineup, but the manager did not want to push it to rush Brantley back.
"Over the weekend, it just wasn't getting better to the point where we were like, 'Man, with the 10-day DL, give him a chance to get it to where he's not limping around all year,'" Francona said. "We know what the diagnosis is, and everything and everyone is kind of on the same page. I think we were just hoping it would feel better. He just needs a little bit more time."
The 30-year-old outfielder was limited to just 11 games in 2016 because of a right shoulder injury, but he has bounced back in '17, batting .296 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 54 games.
"So, it's not fun not to have him," Francona said. "But, I think in all fairness to him, I think we all knew it was the right thing to do."
Austin Jackson took over for Brantley in the Indians' lineup on Monday, and he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the 12-0 rout of the Orioles.

• The Indians signed their first three draftees of the 2017 MLB Draft on Monday. Outfielder Pedro Alfonseca of Black Hawk College in Illinois was Cleveland's 17th-round pick and 522nd overall. Alfonseca led the NJCAA Region 4 with 37 stolen bases and batted .401. Right-hander Chandler Ferguson from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Ind., also signed after being drafted in the 25th round. Ferguson was First Team All-Region in his senior season. The third signee was outfielder Tre' Gantt, from Ohio State University, who was drafted in the 29th round. Gantt led his team with 60 hits, 42 runs scored and 38 walks this past season.
