Astros Stat of the Day: June 2021
MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Astros this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.
June 30: Orioles 5, Astros 2 -- Alvarez extends on-base streak
A fourth-inning RBI single gave designated hitter Yordan Alvarez a season-best 17-game on-base streak, during which he’s batting .300 (18-for-60) with five homers and 17 RBIs.
June 29: Orioles 13, Astros 3 -- First series loss in a month
By losing the first two games to the Orioles, the Astros have dropped their first series since losing two of three against the Padres on May 28-30. After losing two extra-inning games to the Padres in Houston, the Astros won seven consecutive series and split a series against the Tigers before losing a pair to Baltimore.
June 28: Orioles 9, Astros 7 -- Seven runs usually enough
Monday's loss to the Orioles dropped the Astros to 28-3 this season in games in which they have scored at least seven runs. They lost to the Padres, 11-8, in 12 innings on May 29 and 12-8 to the Red Sox on June 10.
June 27: Tigers 2, Astros 1 -- Straw finding groove in June
Astros center fielder Myles Straw went 9-for-18 in four games against the Tigers to continue his offensive turnaround. He is hitting .342 (27-for-79) in June with a .413 on-base percentage. He has also stolen five bases without getting caught.
June 26: Astros 3, Tigers 2 (Game 2) -- Brantley on a tear
Despite going 0-for-3 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Michael Brantley is hitting .456 (31-for-68) in June with a .507 on-base percentage. He has 11 multihit games in 17 games in June.
June 24: Astros 12, Tigers 3 -- Alvarez sets homer mark
Yordan Alvarez's ninth-inning grand slam was his 40th career homer. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, his 40 home runs in 151 games marks an Astros franchise record for the most hit in a span of that many games.
June 23: Astros 13, Orioles 0 -- Alvarez homers way to history
Yordan Alvarez's seventh-inning homer was the 39th of his career and came in his 150th career game, which is a club record. The previous record was 38 homers in the first 150 games with the Astros, which was achieved by Moises Alou in 1998. Carlos Beltrán and George Springer each had 32 homers in their first 150 games with the club.
June 22: Astros 3, Orioles 1 -- Greinke up in record books
Zack Greinke made his 475th career start on Tuesday, taking sole possession of the 66th spot on the all-time list. He tossed 7 1/3 innings -- his fifth consecutive quality start against the O's. It was Greinke's 216th career win, and he is now tied with Wilbur Cooper, Charlie Hough and Curt Schilling for 86th all-time.
June 21: Astros 10, Orioles 2 -- Second-longest non-no-no bid
Jake Odorizzi tossed five innings of no-hit baseball on Monday at Camden Yards. When he exited the game, his bullpen carried the combined no-hitter until the eighth inning. Odorizzi's five innings marked the longest outing by a starter who left the game with an active no-hitter at Camden Yards after which his team was unable to complete the combined no-no. The last pitcher to achieve this feat was Kyle Gibson on March 31, 2018, when he tossed six innings in an almost no-hit bid at Oriole Park.
June 20: Astros 8, White Sox 2 -- Next man up!
It appears third base will be in good hands while Alex Bregman recovers from his left quad strain. Following a 4-for-5 game from Abraham Toro on Sunday, the Astros' starting third basemen are 8-for-15 over the past four games, with Toro and Robel García driving in a combined eight runs in the starting spot during the sweep of the White Sox.
June 19: Astros 7, White Sox 3 -- Astros light up Lance Lynn
With the bases loaded for the Astros in the third inning, Robel García hit a two-out, bases-clearing double off the right-field wall to give them a 5-1 lead. It marked the first time all season a team has scored more than three earned runs against White Sox starter and American League Cy Young candidate Lance Lynn. In fact, Houston is the only team to score at least four earned runs against Lynn since 2019, doing so twice last season (6 ER on Sept. 3, 9 ER on Sept. 24).
June 18: Astros 2, White Sox 1 -- Yordan for the win
Yordan Alvarez is in just his third season as a big leaguer, which leaves plenty of room for "firsts" for the 23-year-old. Against the White Sox, Alvarez accomplished arguably the biggest "first" of his young career. In the bottom of the ninth against Chicago reliever Garrett Crochet, Alvarez drove an 0-1 slider down the right-field line, scoring Yuli Gurriel from first. The double became Alvarez's first walk-off base hit.
June 17: Astros 10, White Sox 2 -- Altuve can't stop hitting homers
Jose Altuve has recorded 8 home runs in his last 10 games, which is the most he's ever recorded in a 10-game span. His eighth homer arrived as a solo shot in the sixth inning of the Astros win over the White Sox on Thursday. Altuve has hit four homers in his past eight at-bats.
June 16: Astros 8, Rangers 4 -- Altuve, from finish to start
Jose Altuve is the first player in Major League history to hit a walk-off grand slam and then hit a leadoff homer in the next game. He is the first player to hit a walk-off home run and then hit a leadoff home run in the next game since Charlie Blackmon did so on April 19 and April 20 in 2019. Altuve is also the second Astros player to record a walk-off home run and then hit leadoff home run in the next game. The other was George Springer, April 5-6, 2017.
June 15: Astros 6, Rangers 3 (10) -- Altuve's grand walk-off
Jose Altuve's walk-off grand slam was the first by an Astros player since Aug. 16, 2011, when Brian Bogusevic homered off Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol. Altuve's walk-off slam was the ninth in club history.
June 13: Astros 14, Twins 3 -- Another three-double day
Astros outfielder Michael Brantley recorded his third three-double game of the season, putting him in elite company. He's only the fifth player in the modern era (since 1900) to have three games with at least three doubles in a season, and he's the first Astros player to do it. The others are: Earl Sheely (1926), Mike Lowell (2006), Aaron Rowand ('07) and Billy Butler ('09).
June 12: Twins 5, Astros 2 -- Top of order not tip-top
The top five hitters in the Astros' lineup went a combined 0-for-18 with six strikeouts -- Jose Altuve (0-for-4), Michael Brantley (0-for-2 with two walks), Alex Bregman (0-for-4), Yordan Alvarez (0-for-4) and Yuli Gurriel (0-for-4).
June 11: Astros 6, Twins 4 -- A Central theme
After going 4-for-4 vs. Minnesota, Michael Brantley is a career .310 hitter against the American League Central, which is the highest batting average against teams in the division by any active player with a minimum of 800 at-bats.
June 10: Red Sox 12, Astros 8 -- Altuve goes golfing
On an 0-2 pitch that was destined for the dirt, Jose Altuve reached down and whacked a slider up and over the Green Monster. The ball was just 0.85 feet off the ground, making it the lowest pitch hit for a home run this season (0.01 feet lower than a pitch Javier Báez homered on earlier in the year). In fact, it was also the lowest pitch hit for a homer since the start of the 2018 season.
June 9: Astros 8, Red Sox 3 -- Doubles for days
A key part of the Astros' offensive explosion on Wednesday night was a tidal wave of two-baggers. Houston hitters combined for seven doubles, including two each from Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman. The Astros are second in the Majors in doubles this season (122; Boston leads with 138), and they're the only team to hit seven or more doubles on more than one occasion.
June 8: Astros 7, Red Sox 1 -- Correa's one-of-a-kind homer
No one -- not even Carlos Correa himself -- was sure that Correa's first-inning fly ball had stayed fair for a home run. But it was confirmed after a replay review, granting Correa with the shortest projected distance (310 feet) and highest launch angle (49 degrees) for a home run in the Majors this season. It was also just the fourth over-the-wall homer with a launch angle of 49-plus degrees since the Statcast era began in 2015.
June 6: Astros 6, Blue Jays 3 -- Double-digit hits for Houston
Astros batters combined for 12 hits on Sunday, which marked the 23rd time they’ve had double-digit hits in a game this season, trailing only the Blue Jays (25) for the most in MLB. The Astros had the leadoff man reach base safely in each of the first six innings.
June 5: Blue Jays 6, Astros 2 -- Correa's hot streak
Carlos Correa had three hits Saturday and has reached base safely in 10 games, during which he’s batting .400 (14-for-35) with three doubles, four homers, 10 RBIs and 12 walks. He has a .553 on-base percentage and 1.382 OPS in that span.
June 4: Astros 13, Blue Jays 1 -- Astros strong behind Greinke
The Astros are 10-3 in games started by Zack Greinke, and 22-22 in games started by everyone else.
June 3: Red Sox 5, Astros 1 -- Gurriel's 15th multihit game
First baseman Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, giving him 15 multihit games this season. He didn't have any multihit games last year.
June 2: Astros 2, Red Sox 1 -- Be the best. Beat the best.
The Astros improved to 21-13 against teams with a .500 record or better, giving them the best winning percentage from among any team in the Major Leagues in that category. They surpassed the Brewers, who are 17-11 (.607). The only team with more wins against teams with a .500 record or better is Tampa Bay (23).
June 1: Astros 5, Red Sox 1 -- Altuve's homers at home
Jose Altuve’s leadoff homer was his 78th career regular-season homer at Minute Maid Park, tying him with Carlos Lee for the fifth-most in club history. The only players who have hit more are Lance Berkman (157), Jeff Bagwell (108), Craig Biggio (79) and George Springer (79).
