Bailey (biceps tendinitis) hits 10-day IL
MINNEAPOLIS -- On Saturday night, the Twins pushed Homer Bailey's next start back one day, citing a need to keep their starting rotation fresh. But Sunday afternoon, they went a step further by placing Bailey on the 10-day injured list with right biceps tendinitis and recalled Sean Poppen to take his place on the 30-man roster.
Bailey was effective in his Twins debut on Tuesday, when he allowed two runs in five innings as he pitched the Twins to victory over the Cardinals. His stint on the IL is retroactive to July 29, meaning he could possibly miss just one turn in the starting rotation.
Bailey was scheduled to start Sunday's series finale against Cleveland but was initially pushed back a day to Monday's series opener against the Pirates, with Tyler Clippard serving as an opener ahead of bulk man Devin Smeltzer to fill the rotation spot.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the club began monitoring Bailey a few days ago and hoped he could make his next start, but the tendinitis didn't resolve itself quickly enough for the Twins to feel comfortable putting the veteran right-hander on the mound. According to Baldelli, there's not a high degree of concern about Bailey's condition, and there's hope that a few extra days' rest will alleviate the condition.
"Just the fact that we were even talking about him potentially still making this start with a minor bout of this tendinitis probably shows that we didn’t think it was a major concern," Baldelli said. "That being said, it didn’t resolve itself at the pace we were hoping, and so we’re going to give him the time."
The Twins are now without two members of their expected Opening Day starting rotation, with Bailey hitting the shelf alongside All-Star right-hander Jake Odorizzi, who has mostly recovered from a right intercostal strain but is still building up for the regular season. Odorizzi is expected to face live hitters at the Twins' alternate training site in St. Paul, Minn., on Monday.
Randy Dobnak has filled in effectively during Odorizzi's absence, having allowed one run over nine innings across a pair of starts. The Twins have other length options on the roster who could temporarily fill in, including left-handers Lewis Thorpe and Smeltzer, who have each made a pair of extended relief appearances in 2020.
Poppen was originally stretched out as a starting pitcher in Summer Camp, but he was shaky with his control throughout the training period. The 26-year-old had a 7.56 ERA in 8 1/3 innings last season, with nine strikeouts and five walks.
