Free-agent outfielder Héctor Olivera received a 10-day prison sentence on Thursday, when he was found guilty on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge, according to USA Today.
Olivera was sentenced to 90 days in jail by an Arlington County (Va.) General District Court judge, but the judge suspended 80 of those days, USA Today reported, citing court records.
The Padres gave Olivera his unconditional release on Aug. 10 after acquiring the 31-year-old from the Braves in a trade for Matt Kemp. At the time, Olivera was serving an 82-game suspension that Major League Baseball handed down for violating its domestic violence policy. When the suspension ran out, San Diego immediately designated Olivera for assignment.
Olivera was originally charged in April, while the Braves were on the road for a series against the Nationals and a woman alerted authorities that she had been assaulted by him at the team's hotel in Arlington, Va.
A native of Cuba, Olivera signed a six-year, $62.5 million free-agent contract with the Dodgers in 2015. He was dealt to the Braves last July and debuted in the Majors in September.
