Baker, Neris suspended for role in SEA-HOU scuffle
HOUSTON -- Astros manager Dusty Baker was suspended for Tuesday’s game against the Mariners at Minute Maid Park, and relief pitcher Héctor Neris was suspended four games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for their roles in a benches-clearing incident in the ninth inning of Monday’s game against the Mariners.
In addition, Baker, Neris, Mariners manager Scott Servais and Astros coaches Joe Espada, Omar López and Troy Snitker were fined undisclosed amounts. Espada managed Tuesday’s game against the Mariners in Baker’s absence.
Neris has elected to appeal his suspension, which was set to begin Tuesday. He is eligible to play until the appeals process is complete.
“The main thing is, we’ve just got to beat ‘em,” Baker said Tuesday prior to the announcement of the fines and suspension.
In the ninth inning Monday, home-plate umpire Chris Guccione issued warnings to both benches after Neris threw a pitch behind Mariners first baseman Ty France. Both benches and bullpens emptied, but there were no physical altercations. Neris was ejected later in the inning when he threw a pitch behind Eugenio Suárez. By rule, Baker was automatically ejected.
When asked if the pitch was intentional, Neris said: “I don’t have a comment about that.”
Baker received a one-game suspension last July when Astros pitcher Brooks Raley hit Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford with a pitch after Dylan Moore hit a pinch-hit grand slam in Seattle. Raley was suspended three games for throwing at Crawford.
Servais indicated earlier Tuesday that he anticipated he’d been fined. He also was ready to move forward from the incident.
“Things happen in the course of the game,” Servais said. “Players do things, and we all react. We get tied up in the emotion of it. For me, [Monday] night is over. We have to focus on [Tuesday’s] game, and coming in here, you want to win this series.”
Servais has a long-standing relationship with Baker, going all the way back to his playing career, when he was a platoon catcher for Baker’s Giants in 1999. Servais has expressed gratitude to Baker for that opportunity multiple times through the years.
“I’ve got a ton of respect for Dusty,” Servais said. “He’s one of the best managers of all time and has a track record to back it up, so no issues. We’ll play the game tonight and go forward.”
